Herbal Medicine Week: Herbs to help with Breastmilk

by hayley on June 23 2010

Borage leaves (Borago officinalis)

have an ability to increase milk flow and are available in tea or tincture form. Borage can ensure an abundant supply of milk, act as a mild laxative, and soothe mum and baby’s nerves.

Blessed thistle (Carbenia benedicta)

has been traditionally used to increase milk supply. Being quite bitter blessed thistle is said to lift postpartum depression via it’s action on the liver.

Comfrey leaf (Symphytum officinalis)

Comfrey leaf infusion increases the amount and richness of the breast milk, and is also very healing to the ligaments, muscles and tissues which may have been affected during the birth.

Fennel water (Foeniculum vulgare)

is a tried-and-true classic. A strong Fennel infusion not only increases the breast milk but also eases and settles the digestion of Mum and baby. Fennel is related to Dill which is used in Gripe Water, so you can see the likeness here.

Hops (Humulus lupulus)

is a great remedy for nighttime feedings, as it brings sleep along with increased milk flow.

Aromatic seeds

such as anise, cumin, fennel, caraway, coriander, and dill increase milk production and tone the digestive system. Their powers are carried through the breast milk, easing colic and indigestion.

Herbal Medicines are great for treating babies and if mum is breastfeeding that makes it even easier – we make a medicine that the mum takes, and the benefits are delivered to baby through the breast milk. How perfect is that?
