The Power Of Focus

What you see is what you get

What are you focusing on?

If you want to feel really awful right now, it would be quite easy, wouldn’t it! All you would have to do is to think about something painful that has happened in your life, and focus all your attention on it – if you thought about it long enough you could feel really awful, couldn’t you!

That would be crazy! Would you sit through a lousy movie over and over again? Of course not! So why go to a lousy movie in your mind?

This experiment shows just how easy it is for anybody to slip into lousy feelings – and how crucial it is to control your focus.

Proof of focus

Let’s use an example….
Imagine you go to a party and you have a video camera. All night you focus that camera lens on the left corner of the room where a couple is arguing. As you focus on it, you, too might get caught up in their anger and unhappiness. Since you’re focusing on their rage, you’re probably thinking, ‘what a miserable couple. What a miserable party.’

What if, that same night at the party, you’d focused your attention on the right corner? In the right corner, there are a bunch of people laughing and joking and instead of fighting, they’re having a great time! Then, if somebody asked you, ‘what was the party like?’ you’d say, ‘It was an excellent party!’

The point is simple: There are unlimited things people can notice, but too many of us focus on what’s terrible, on the things we can’t control.

So you can see why focus is so important.

How does this relate to you?

You and I must make sure that when problems come up we focus on solutions, that we focus on where we want to go instead of on what frightens us.

Whatever you think about most you’ll experience.

Even if things are tough, you’ve got to focus on what you can do, on what you can control.

If you wanted to feel good right now, you could do that just as easily, couldn’t you? You could focus on something that’s made you happy, something that’s made you feel good about yourself or your family or friends.

You could focus on something that you’re grateful for today.

Or you could focus so intensely on the future you’re dreaming of that you get excited about it in advance.

That will give you the energy to start making things happen.
