More about our Stress & Anxiety Workshop -Part 1

by hayley on March 24 2010

We are building up a nice list of people for our Stress & Anxiety workshop – it’s in just over 2 weeks and we are really looking forward to running it at our practice in Hythe. Anyone who can’t fit into this group can go on our waiting list for future workshops as we will be repeating the workshop again during the year.

Do I have to talk to people I don’t know about what’s bothering me?

People have been asking us whether they will need to share any information during the workshop. Of course, people are more than welcome to tell people the process they are going through or any relevant information they think will help someone else, but no one is obliged to share anything they don’t want to. That just wouldn’t be right!

Surely I have to tell you all the ins and outs of the problem in order for you to help me with it?

Contrary to common belief you do not need to talk over a problem for hours and hours in order to reach a resolution. It is often more about a change of perspective on the issue. Of course sometimes we may choose to talk over a problem with friends and family, because we want to. And this is fine. When it comes to asking trained professionals for help, you will find that it is quite different from approaching a friend to help.

How can you help without knowing what the problem is?

We will be working through processes that help with all sorts of problems, no matter what they are, and we do not need to know what the precise problem is to be able to work on it. This may sounds strange, but you will understand once you see it in action. We are looking more at the processes that you go through when dealing with the problem and changes that can be made there. There are many strategies for dealing with stress – if what you do works for you 100% then there is no need to change anything. If however, you are unhappy with the way things are going then it is time for a change.

This means for example:

• Do you become introverted when you have a problem and keep it to yourself? Does this work for you? Or do you find yourself going round and round in circles, thinking you are going mad? For some people, keeping a problem to themselves works for them, for others it doesn’t.
• Do you need to resolve a problem in your head before you can even bring yourself to speak about it with others? Or do you need to talk about the problem out loud? For some people, talking about the problem that stresses them is good for them – they can work the problem and a solution out simply by talking it through. This can sometimes surprise the other person when they come up with a solution for you as they have heard everything you have said about the problem, but by that point you are already over it!
• Do you try to kid yourself that everything is ok when it isn’t? Does this work for you?

Stress can be a part of daily life for many people, and of course things happen from time to time that can completely knock us for six, and we wonder how we will ever pick ourselves up again. And think back to the past to a time where you wondered if you would ever get over a problem, and you did. So it can happen again.

We wonder what happens for you when you are experiencing a problem that stresses you? Some of the common feelings people have are:
• Tightness in the chest
• A sinking feeling in the stomach
• Palpitations or a tight chest
• Feeling sick
• Loose bowels or constipation
• A feeling of overwhelm
• A loss of interest in daily life
• Isolation

Why not attend our Stress and Anxiety Workshop and learn about what can be changed to alleviate these feelings……..
