It is that time of year when students are getting very nervous about their exams.
It is important to say, first of all that each person is different and the way that we all deal with exams and other pressures can be very varied. So one person’s experience can be very different to someone else’s. This is important to realise when you are working with people to make positive changes.
The Various Ways a Student can feel about Exams
There is often a lot riding on these results and the student are receiving encouragement and support from teachers, the school and parents. At this delicate age, some students can interpret this support as pressure, and for some students this can be paralysing.
For others even the thought of the exam brings them out in a cold sweat.
Some students cannot sleep so well around their revision and exams and this can make things worse.
Some very talented pupils simply do not believe in their own abilities.
For others they feel they just cannot retain the information they need to retain or their mind goes completely blank and they want to learn tools to access the information they know is in there somewhere!
How to Know if you can be Helped
The way to tell whether a student needs help with exams is not to wait until the exams and ‘see how they do’. By then it is too late. The way that we feel about something that is going to happen tells us a lot about how we are likely to deal with it when it happens.
If someone is petrified when they just think about their exams then this is very likely to interfere with and overshadow the whole experience from learning, to revision and then to the exam itself.
Many people do not know that there are many tried and tested techniques that can be used to improve the way a student feels about their exams and in turn changes the way they perform.
