Getting the most out of Life

Do you feel that you’re getting the most out of your day to day life? Are you doing the sorts of things that you really want to do? Or does the week pass by in a blur only to enjoy those precious two days on the weekend?

For many of us we live our lives from minute to minute dealing with our work, housework and life in general and we don’t make time for those things that truely make us happy. So sometimes it’s helpful to stop and take stock of life and figure out how you spend your time.

The Life Laundry Exercise

This is a powerful tool that you can use to assess your life. It will take a few minutes of your time, but those few minutes can help you to reassess what you are doing and make sure that you are getting exactly what you want out of your days. Making sure you know what balance you want to achieve. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you automatically achieve that balance, right now, you may need other tools to help you with that. This is just a very good place to start!
And remember, this exercise can only help you if you actually do it! Just reading it doesn’t count!

How to do the Life Laundry

Step one Take your life-changing notebook, and note how you spend the minutes of your day. Notice how much time you spend checking emails…. Yes, and those web distractions.. (How do we resist when we have this wisdom at our fingertips!) How much time you spend having just one more cup of tea, watching the soaps you know you don’t even like etc, browsing the junk mail and all those other distractions that prevent you having time to totally love the life you lead.
e.g.	7am – 7.30 Up washed and dressed
7.30—7.35 Dancing like no-one can see me

Make sure you include all those lost minutes which seem to slip by in between activities. And add a love heart to all those activities which are done just to make you happy.

Step two At the end of each day allocate the activities to categories. E.g. exercise, fun,
eating, domestic chores, actively loving my children/friends, working, sleeping etc. – whatever is relevant. Next just add up the time spent doing each.

Step three Then at the end of the week, take the time to convert the time spent on each category into percentages of a 24 hour day and plot onto a pie chart. Otherwise just divide a circle into 24 and colour in how much time you spend on each activity.

Step 4 Now Ask yourself …
Does my circle look how I would like it to look?
What am I doing that is already my ideal life…. Appreciate this.
What is the most important thing in my life?
Do I deserve more time?
What makes me happy? Do I allocate these things enough time?
What steps am I taking to achieve my goals? Am I doing something everyday towards this?

Now we know what you do and what you don’t do we can take action to make sure your choices bring you what you want to do!

In conclusion

The great thing about this tool is that it is not all about what you can do differently.
It is also about appreciating the things that you are already doing to achieve the life that you want.
These are things that you can build on to get you even more of what you want.

If you’d like some assistance in making your life the way you want it to be then why not book a consultation with Hayley Jones and let her help you discover what you really want in life.

We recently launched a ‘Recommend a Friend’ scheme at Foreman & Jones. this is because we know that so many of our patients recommend us to their friends and family and we wanted to say thank you for these recommendations.

How Does it Work?

The system is quite straight forward. A patient is given a ‘Recommend a Friend’ card. The patient’s name is placed on the card, and they can then give this card to friends and family who have not seen us before. When that person books a new patient appointment, the new patient automatically receives £10 off their bill, and the patient who gave them the card receives a £10 credit on their account.

What Can I Use my Credit For?

They can use this to buy over-the-counter herbal products, or can use it for any appointments provided by Jodie Foreman or Hayley Jones.

How Do I Get a Recommend a Friend Card?

If you would like a Recommend a Friend card, simply contact us and you can start collecting rewards for yourself. Terms and conditions apply.

Thank you everybody!

For many women, menopause brings relief from monthly periods, freedom from worry about unplanned pregnancy, and excitement about entering a new phase of life. For many others, menopause brings physical and emotional upheaval linked to changes occurring as the female body makes its transition out of the child-bearing years. Menopause is when a woman’s menstrual periods stop altogether. A woman is said to have gone through the menopause when her menstrual periods have stopped for an entire year.

The physical and emotional signs and symptoms have been known for some women to span between 1 & 10yrs! For some women the symptoms associated can be extremely stressful and can greatly affect their day to day life.

Symptoms include….

•	Hot Flushes
•	Irregular periods
•	Vaginal dryness
•	Headaches/ increased anxiety and/or depression
•	Lack of concentration, irritability, insomnia. To name but a few

So why do some women seem to sail through menopause and others have so many symptoms?

As we all know we are all different and our bodies deal with hormonal changes in different ways. There are also many things that affect the way we experience menopause, it is not just because of declining oestrogen levels that we experience symptoms – it’s much more complex than that.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is extremely well suited in helping balance hormonal changes. For most women taking Black Cohosh or Sage over the counter just isn’t enough, and many women find that HRT does not suit them. At Foreman & Jones we conduct a thorough consultation to explore the symptoms you are experiencing and how you are feeling and a medicine is prescribed specifically for you. You may be interested to know that we treat many women with hormonal complaints and there are over 40 herbs which can be helpful. We endeavour to improve your body’s functioning so that your hormones are balanced and you can then stop taking your herbal medicine and are left symptom free.

On the breakfast news this morning on BBC One they were discussing ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis – also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)) and the recent findings of a small-scale study which suggests that child sufferers of ME/CFS were fighting off an infection. This was due to the finding that these children all had abnormalities of white blood cells.

Herbal Approach to ME/CFS

Our training as herbalists always treated ME as a post-viral fatigue, so this is not any great news to us. But we thought this would be a good time to discuss ME from the herbal approach, using natural remedies.

You can read the article yourself <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-11204884 "target='_blank'>here.

Chronic Fatigue often brushed off

On the news this morning they were speaking about the way in which the idea of ME/CFS is often brushed off by the medical profession, since there is some controversy over its existence.

My personal attitude to that would be ‘try saying that to an ME sufferer’!

How do you Treat a Patient with ME/CFS

We are very fortunate as herbalists that each medicine that we prescribe is individual. It is closely tailored to what that patient needs, so whether they have been diagnosed with ME/CFS or not, we will treat them based on the symptoms they are reporting to us, not only blood test results, or whether they fit into an orthodox disease label. This is because whether somebody has been diagnosed with ME/CFS or not, if they are experiencing severe tiredness, muscle pain, tender lymph nodes, multi-joint pain, headaches and so on, you do your best as a herbalist to help them.

We see many patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and then many many more who are ‘on the cusp’ of a condition like this. And we love to help them both. For those people on the cusp, often the biggest improvement people can make is to change their lifestyle, since for some people the tiredness comes about since they are racing around at 100mph. For other people with ME/CFS they had an infection some time ago and have never been the same since. For others the pathology is more complex.

Fight the Infection, Support the Immune System, Help Energy Levels

When it is a case of a persistent infection causing whole-body symptoms, a multi-angle approach is needed. Yes, treatment is needed to help to fight the infection, whatever type it may be, but also the immune system needs some more general support. Because it is often the case that if an infection has gone on for a long time and not been fought off by the body, then the actual function of the immune system can be altered. It can cease to fight the infection it is supposed to fight and can instead start attacking itself and its own antibodies. So it is very important that the function of the immune system is restored to normal.

As well as this, there are herbs known as adrenal agents or adaptogens (we use these in our <a href="http://foremanandjonesherbaldispensary.co.uk/tag/energy-tonic/"target='_blank'>Energy Tonic Mix) that work to assist the body with its energy balance. They moderate the body’s response to stress (physical and/or emotional) and encourage the body’s endurance.

We are all different

The quote I found most interesting in this article was this:
‘Some doctors have said that the idea that different types of chronic fatigue are all caused by a single virus is not plausible’

I would tend to agree. Each person with ME/CFS is an individual and the reasons for this illness can be multi-factorial.

For individual cases of CFS/ME other herbs can be employed such as mood-lifting herbs, anti-fungals (if there is a yeast component to the illness – Candida), lymphatic herbs to assist the function of the lymphatic system and clear the tender lymph nodes, hepatics to support eh liver, and nervines to assist the nervous system, relaxation, energy and sleep.

With children starting back at school, many parents worry about the dreaded head lice. We have treated lots of children over the years who are allergic / intolerant to the standard chemical treatments.

A bit more about head lice

Head lice come in groups and are indiscriminate on who they live on. They travel from one person to the other via close contact and spread easier the longer the person’s hair. A louse can live for up to 5 weeks and can survive for 24 hours away from the body. The eggs become glued to the roots of the hair, making it impossible for them to fall out of the hair, these eggs hatch after a period of 8 days. The eggs (nits) are visible as small white specs, where as when they hatch they are pale greyish brown in colour. Both the nits and louse collate in the roots of the hair.

Top Tips to avoid head lice

• Keep hairbrushes, towels, hats and pillows separate.
• Tie long hair back
• Put plenty of conditioner on your child’s hair and comb through with a nit comb at least once a week.

The Natural Head Lice Strategy

The benefits of this easy approach are that it is:

Effective

A totally natural approach with no manufactured chemicals

Appropriate for all the family

A treatment that does not cause resistance in lice

The two-step approach is as follows:

1) An essential oil treatment balm (100mls at £7.00) (between 1 and 4 treatments depending on hair length)

Apply balm to the hair at night (approx. 25 – 50mls of balm required, depending on the length of the hair)

Cover the hair with Clingfilm and leave on for at least one hour (but preferably overnight). Make sure the balm will not get into the eyes if leaving on overnight.

Wash out in the morning with shampoo, then use plenty of conditioner and a ‘nit comb’ to comb the hair through.

Wash the conditioner out and then do the final rinse. (using Quassia bark infusion – see below)

2) Quassia bark infusion (£4.20 for 50g) (at least 2 treatments)

Use 25g of herb to a pint of boiling water, simmer for 10 minutes, strain and cool.

Use this as a final rinse on the hair after using the balm.

This rinse will then need to be repeated after 7 days to ensure complete treatment.
