Herbal Medicines work extremely well in acute situations and especially for First Aid.  We hope you can use this information at home.

External Remedies To Repel Insects

Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon Grass, Rosemary and Tea Tree essential oils have all been used successfully over the ages to prevent being bitten or stung by insects. These oils can be put into a lotion or water spray which can be applied to the skin. To prevent insects from coming into the area where you are sleeping the oils can be placed in a dish of hot water in the bedroom at night.

Internal Repellents

Feverfew tincture can be used as an effective repellent and is taken internally. For those that are particularly sensitive to insect bites and stings this is an extremely helpful treatment. The tincture of this herb can be taken regularly during times when being bitten is more likely.

To Soothe Bites & Stings

Burdock, Plantain, Echinacea, Feverfew, Nettle, Yellow Dock and St John’s Wort can all be used reduce swelling, inflammation, irritation, infection and pain. These herbs can be added to a bite and sting lotion or cream and are very effective.
Neat essential oils of Lavender and Tea Tree are also very effective if applied directly to the inflamed area.

Home Remedies

Try slicing some fresh onion and placing it on the affected area. A paste of Bicarbonate of soda can also be very helpful for Bee stings and Vinegar can ‘take the pain’ out of wasp stings.

Tinctures are £9.90 per 100ml, insect bite lotion is £5.95 for 30ml and essential oils are also available at Foreman & Jones.
