It’s that time of year when everyone’s off on holiday. And everyone is so excited about it! Well, not quite everyone. For some people, their fear of flying puts a real dampener on their holiday experience.
For some people it is an out-and-out phobia – they just can’t make themselves go on a plane. So they plan their holiday around boats and buses and long drives.
For others it is an extreme fear. This means they can make themselves go on a plane, but it is not a relaxing experience by anyone’s standard.
How to Cope with a Fear of Flying
Some people cope with it by getting drunk on the plane! Others take Valium! Others see a hypnotherapist to address their fear and anxiety so that they can comfortably enjoy their flight and probably surprise themselves in the process!
Fear of Flying Case Study
The most dramatic flying phobia patient I ever treated was about 4 years ago. She had booked an appointment through reception so I met her on the day, and found out she was flying the NEXT DAY!! She was absolutely petrified and wasn’t looking forward to it at all. So we set to work and she left feeling happy and confident about her flight. When she returned she sent me a message to say that she had gone home and had actually been excited while packing for her holiday, and didn’t have a problem at all on the flight there or back. She was so grateful and so were her family, because they got the take their mum on holiday without seeing her change into a completely different person when it came to flying!
For this lady her fear of flying was actually down to claustrophobia. She had had an awful experience in a meeting in a small room in the past where somebody else had been out drinking late, so they smelt of drink, and actually vomited during the meeting. Following this experience my patient had had a fear of enclosed spaces, even cars. So it was not just about flying, it was about more than that and we tackled those issues at the same time.
Individual Approach for Success
Fears and phobias are very interesting to treat, since the circumstances in which they came about can vary so greatly. So an individual approach is needed to help people to feel confident and happy about flying.
For some people I use Hypnosis, for others NLP, and others a combination of the two, depending on what that person needs. If you would like to speak to me about addressing a fear or phobia then please send us an enquiry or phone us on 01303 760001.
